BLACK DIAMOND EQUIPMENT. LTD
The roots of Black Diamond Equipment trace back to 1957, when 18-year-old Yvon Chouinard bought a hammer and anvil and started pounding out hand-forged rock climbing pitons. Over the next several decades, those first chromoly pitons-followed by a steady stream of other radical, game-changing products-forever altered the sport of climbing, such that its history can't be told without mention of our product innovations.
In 1989, the employees, friends and customers of Chouinard Equipment, led by Peter Metcalf, bought the company's assets and formed Black Diamond Equipment, Ltd., a privately owned company dedicated to the design and construction of the best climbing, mountaineering and off-piste ski gear in the world. To facilitate this mission, in 1991 Black Diamond Equipment relocated from the surf of Ventura, California to the mountains of Salt Lake City, Utah, a town within minutes of great rock climbing, ice climbing, hiking, trail running, and backcountry and resort skiing. The thought was to have the location reside on the asset side of the company's balance sheet as a competitive advantage. While we've come a long way from our small operation in California, we are still just as committed to our sports and the quality products we make.
From carabiners, skis, headlamps and harnesses, to freeride ski boots and trekking poles, we design and manufacture an exceptionally wide range of superior products for climbing, skiing and hiking. This diverse collection of products is united by excellence in quality, true innovation, and inspired details and features. This is partly the result of desire and diligence by an extraordinary team of people, as well as the fact that we are climbers and skiers ourselves.
Throughout the last two-plus decades, having such a dedicated, sport-obsessed R&D team here at Black Diamond Equipment has garnered us numerous design and performance awards for iconic, standard-setting products that truly make a difference in the communities of the life-defining sports we were founded to serve.
SUSTAINABILITY & ACTIVISM
We are committed to excellence in our product design as well as our respect for the environment. One of the founding 10 principles of Black Diamond Equipment is "to champion the preservation of, and access to, mountain, crag and canyon environments while minimizing our own environmental footprint." More than two decades later, we are more committed to these guiding principles than ever before. We express this by focusing on making our products, manufacturing processes, supply chain, facilities and marketing materials more sustainable and less environmentally impactful. Equally important is our continued outspoken advocacy for conservation and access causes-locally, nationally and globally-as well as providing philanthropic support to grassroots conservation and access-focused non-profit groups.
Black Diamond Equipment, led by CEO and Founder Peter Metcalf, has become a recognized voice for conservation and preservation ethics in both outdoor enthusiast and mainstream communities-especially in Utah, where our global headquarters are located at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains. Working with government agencies, landowners and advocacy groups, Black Diamond Equipment has led the way in showing that wilderness preservation and business success can be symbiotic. Black Diamond's brand is synonymous with this leadership.
After more than two decades in business, we are focused and committed to the route ahead, one full of great opportunities to further establish ourselves as a leading company throughout the climbing, skiing and outdoor industry. We are stronger than ever, thanks to the many Black Diamond Equipment employees in the United States, Europe and Asia, whose limitless energy and hands-on involvement have created a stream of fantastic products for our worldwide family of climbers, skiers and outdoor enthusiasts, while also championing the causes of conservation, access and sustainability.
